CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
The debate on abortion and a woman's right to chose continues to be a hot topic in the 8th Congressional District.
Joe Walsh is seeking re-election but his opponent Tammy Duckworth says she fears for her rights if Republicans get in office.
"I think we need to have some real discussions in this district," Duckworth says.
Tammy Duckworth says she can't talk about other issues with her opponent in the newly re-drawn 8th Congressional District because of what she calls Joe Walsh's extreme views on abortion and women's rights.
"He thinks that a woman shouldn't have a choice when it comes to their own body and he wants to prohibit any instance when a woman can choose," Duckworth says.
Representative Jackie Speier of California was with Duckworth at a news conference. Speier said she fears for women's health if Republicans are in office and she once told a predominantly male congress about her desires to have an abortion.
"The Republican majority in the house has made the issue of contraception and abortion a priority in their agenda," says Speier.
Walsh's controversial comments on abortion came up at a town hall meeting in Schaumburg. During last week's debate against Duckworth, Walsh said that abortions never save lives.
"Here is my official stance. And again nobody should be confused on where Walsh and Duckworth stand. I am pro-life without exception," Walsh explained.
Walsh said issues like jobs, the economy, and Obamacare should be talked about more during this election.
"Mrs. Duckworth doesn't want to talk about that stuff. So she picks these other issues like abortion and gay rights all important issues but what about the house that's burning down."
