CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
When choosing where to watch the World Series, you might ask if the place has the game in high definition.
But, high-def could soon be passé. In a year or two, we may be asking: do they have Ultra HD?
Yes, they're upgrading on us again. A new 84-inch TV just became the first Ultra HD television to go on sale in America, made by LG.
Remember when a 40-inch screen was considered big? They just kept getting bigger and bigger.
That's why Ultra HD could eventually catch on. As screens get larger, the picture quality starts to get lower. Ultra HD has four times the resolution of regular HD, so you won't see the pixels.
Bigger truly can be better if you have space--and money--for it. The LG Ultra HD TV costs $20,000. That's cheap compared to the 84-inch set Sony is about to come out with priced at $25,000.
If Ultra HD starts to catch-on, prices are expected to drop. Of course, some people thought 3D TV would catch on. Even though it hasn't, it is still a feature on the new Ultra HD sets.
Another reason an 84-inch TV seems odd to some is that technology has generally been going the other way: small. Smartphones are as common as milk in the refrigerator. Apple just downsized a version of the iPad.
So, what do you think? Will giant Ultra HD TVs become household standards? Leave your comments on our Facebook page.
