Cubs try to stop scalping, pull season ticket renewals

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Getting season tickets for the Cubs just got easier, because dozens of long time Cubs fans  got letters Wednesday saying they lost their seats.

The Cubs front office says they sent the letters out to some season ticket holders because they have exploited their seats on websites for money.

Part of the letter states, "We regret to inform you that we have decided not to renew the license on your account." These are not the words that season ticket holders wanted to hear. But, for some Cubs fans, it's a whole new ball game.

"That would be nice. I wouldn't mind sitting in the bleachers, especially if it's nice out," one fan told FOX Chicago.

The story was first reported on Crains Business website.

"This is not about going after the season ticket holder who goes on third party sellers and can't attend the game and want to get a value for their ticket--that's not what this is geared for," Cubs spokesperson Julian Green explains to FOX Chicago. "At the end of the day, we believe that anyone with large volume, and out of town certainly have objectives other to enjoy the experience of Wrigley Field."

"I think that's very unfair," says Cubs fan Patrick Marshall. "I don't think they should be able to decide for the ticket holders and what they can do wit their tickets."

This is the first time the cubs organization has checked the activity on some season ticket holder accounts. Some Cubs fans say that's foul.

"I do think it's kind of unfair that they're taking them away from them," says another Cubs fan, Matt Nowacki. "They're giving money to the organization so why are they pulling that money away from you."

"They should totally be revoked," says Giants fan Katherine Wessen. "That is why I, as a season ticket holder, would not be able to go to the game."

There are nearly 20,000 season ticket holders and FOX Chicago News has learned that 1,000 seats could become available.

While 40 season ticket holders found out Wednesday that they no longer have their season tickets, other fans who have been on the list for years--if not decades--will get other letters from the Cubs telling them they have just received one of the hottest tickets in town.
