Proposed cigarette tax hike will save lives: Preckwinkle

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle says her proposed cigarette tax will save lives and the county health system.

The extra $1 per pack would make the cost of cigarettes in Chicago the second highest in the nation behind New York City.

Preckwinkle says it would save more than 10,000 Cook County residents from premature smoking related deaths.

The tax hike is part of a nearly $3 billion budget Preckwinkle proposed last week.

A final vote is expected next month.
