Skateboarding skyrockets in Alsip with Bedolla SkaterBoyz

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Bedolla's SkaterBoyz gives kids a place to take risks, get motivated and fit in while boarding in Alsip.

The sport of skateboarding is growing more and more every day. It's estimated more than 20 million Americans skate, and 20 percent are girls or women. That percentage has increased significantly over the last ten years.

Skate parks are developing all over the Chicago area, including Alsip.

Joshua Bedolla started his business several years ago. He said his customers range from 2 years old to 50, and include men, women, kids and even dogs.

With the extreme popularity of the X-Games, skateboarding has its share of new superstars. Forget about "I want to be like Mike" – now it's more like "I want to be like Tony Hawk."

Marcos Maldonado said skateboarding is colorblind.

"Anyone can join," Maldonado said. "Doesn't matter what background you're from or what ethnicity – you're all the same person when you pick up the board."

Another skater said he likes to take chances and life without challenges is boring, because you'd never have the chance to progress. But skating can leave a mark, and require some ibuprofen – or even plaster of Paris.

Trevor broke his nose a few times and needed stitches over his right eye. Neal has broken both of his ankles and his elbow. But they said these things come along with the ride.

For Joshua Bedolla, who brings his son and daughter to work all the time, it's all about offering kids a place to fit in while doing well in school. He has his own kind of honor roll, with a few prizes.

"Any kid who gets straight A's gets three days of skate and free lessons," Bedolla said. "If you get straight A's on all four report cards, we give you a free skateboard, free shoes."

For this Alsip business, it's all about making a better life for yourself by doing something ultra-cool.
