TROY, Mich. (WJBK) - There is now more controversy involving Troy Mayor Janice Daniels. While honoring the city's 2012 Distinguished Citizen Monday night, she got into an argument with its recipient, former Councilwoman Mary Kerwin, over the award's origin.

Daniels, a Republican, said the proclamation was from the Troy Democratic Club. Kerwin, a Democrat running for state representative, interrupted and tried three times to clarify that the proclamation came from the city. But Daniels insisted it was from the city's Democrats. Kerwin says she was surprised by what Daniels said. "It was kind of a kick to the gut to be honest with you," said Kerwin. "Usually when a proclamation has been given, it's been the norm to do it in a graceful and honorable fashion. I thought that it was hurtful and disingenuous."

Daniels is facing a recall effort next month.

FOX 2 reached out to Daniels, but received no response.
