The Talker: iPad Mini unveiled Monday

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Apple is out with another latest, greatest, bestest, must-have, get-in-line-for-it gadget. Ready or not, here comes the iPad Mini.

Its screen is 7.9 inches; about 80% of the full-sized iPad and weighs about half as much too.

Portability is a big part of the appeal, especially for women who will be able to fit the mini in their purses better.

Though Steve Jobs once trashed the idea of a smaller tablet, he was said to have warmed up to the idea eventually. In 2010, he told analysts that people's fingers would be too big for the icons on the screen and that the device would be too small too compete with a regular tablet, and too big to compete with a phone.

Meanwhile, Apple's competitors have been making small tablets and devices like the Kindle Fire, the Nook HD, and the Nexus 7, which have all sold well.

With a starting price of $329, the Mini is a lot more expensive than those gadgets. Wall Street was floored by that dollar figure. It expected the iPad Mini to be priced closer to the competition, around $200.

Apple will start taking orders for the mini on Friday and shipments will start November 2nd.

Apple also announced a new version of the full-sized iPad. It has a faster processor and a more advanced camera.

Apple has sold 84 million iPads since it started selling them two years ago.
