Police are investigating remains found in the South suburbs and the Far South Side. In two unrelated investigations, a decomposed body of a woman was discovered behind a building in Calumet Heights and a fisherman on the Cal Sag Channel found what could be a human skull.
The discovery of the skull has investigators searching to see if it might be connected to an unsolved murder dating back seven years, involving an Indiana teenager.
The Chicago police marine unit, officers from Riverdale, and Illinois state police were searching the Little Calumet River near 132nd and Indiana for more remains.
Fishermen saw a skull around 1 p.m. along the shore and investigators later found another bone, which a source says may be from a human arm. The remains were taken to the Cook County medical examiner's office, but sources say investigators believe the discovery may be connected to the 2005 disappearance of 13-year-old Alexandra Anaya.
The Hammond, Indiana teen vanished in August and her torso was found a few days later floating in the river. It had been weighted down with chains with her arms and legs cut off.
Authorities at the time said Anaya had been molested and killed by her mother's boyfriend, but the Northwest Indiana Times reported that the suspect was charged-- but acquitted--of stalking the family, but not with the girl's murder.
The other set of remains in a separate finding were discovered in the 9100 block of South Harper. The Medical Examiner's Office said the decomposed body was possibly an African American female. It was underneath a vehicle.
State police are handling the developments, but had no comment.
