Bob Sirott’s One More Thing about the debates

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One more thing about the debates.

As usual, today's talk shows, social media, and water cooler talk focused mainly on body language, zingers, gaffes and other factors that really don't have much to do with whether someone would make a good president or not.

The day after debate about the debate is mostly about "important topics" like "binders of women," Biden laughing, Jim Lehrer sleeping, Big Bird, or bayonets. Is the candidate who scores the most debate points the better candidate? Does it really matter if Mitt Romney saying "I love teachers" and "I like cars" came off a bit awkwardly? Should President Obama lose votes because he looked down too much during the first debate?

That kid we all knew in school who excelled at scoring debate points wasn't always presidential material. With two weeks to go until the election, we all need to get back to the real issues, not the superficial ones. But, I wouldn't count on it.

"Paul Ryan shirtless" is Googled nine times more often than "Paul Ryan budget."As Walter Cronkite used to say, "and, that's the way it is."
