Big Lottery winners abound, but $1M prize still unclaimed

Although no one has come forward to claim the winning $1 million Powerball ticket sold in northwest suburban Palatine, several Chicago area people have won big prizes recently.

The winning "quick pick" Powerball ticket -- with Saturday's winning numbers of 4-21-28-31-44 and Powerall 10 -- was sold at the Lamplighter Inn Tavern and Grille at 60 N. Bothwell St., according to the Illinois Lottery.

But some other area residents have been cashing in.

The most recent was Carol Lange of Chicago, who bought a $1 Quick Pick ticket matching all five numbers -- 01-03-12-20-30 -- in the Oct. 17 Lucky Day Lotto drawing, and paid $550,000.

"I recently went to the bank to refinance my house, but now I can pay it off completely," Lange said. "I've always had a feeling I would win big someday, but I'm still shocked."

Lange, a team leader in the mail room for the Central States Pension Fund, also plans to remodel and buy a new car. "This is great timing because my car is falling apart," she said.

She bought her $1 ticket at Butera Foods at 4411 N. Cumberland in Norridge, the Lottery said. The store will receive a $5,500 bonus.

Carl Niess of Arlington Heights won $250,000 in the Oct. 5 Mega Millions drawing after matching all five numbers -- 08-09-16-32-39, according to the Lottery.

Niess, 63, and his wife, Linda, plan to use the money to pay bills and "we'll put a little away for retirement," the release said.

The a part-time furniture salesman purchased the winning $1 Quick Pick ticket at the 7-Eleven at 1 Wolf Rd. in Prospect Heights. The store will receive a $2,500 bonus , according to the Lottery.

Niess also plays Lucky Day Lotto and Lotto, but his previous largest prize was $100.

Elizabeth Diaz Lopez of Wauconda picked a winning "$500 A Week For Life" instant ticket and chose to take her prize as a $380,000 lump sum.

Lopez, 39, works nights at a factory, and purchased her ticket at Three Amigas at 450 Liberty St. in Wauconda. The store will receive a bonus of $3,800.

Barbara Gleason, of Elmhurst, won $100,000 when she matched all five numbers -- 03-06-29-31-33 -- in the Oct. 6 Lucky Day Lotto drawing with a Quick Pick, accordibg to the Lottery.

Gleason, a wife and mother of two, works part-time at a local school, and plans to use her lottery prize to pay bills.

The winning ticket was purchased at Power Market at 572 W. Lake St. in Elmhurst, which will receive $1,000 for selling the winning ticket.
