Mayor Emanuel speaks at the Chicago Innovation Awards after accepting the Visionary Award / Brooke Collins, City of Chicago
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Mayor Rahm Emanuel became the first public official to win the Visionary prize at the Chicago Innovation Awards Monday night.
He was granted the honor at the Harris Theater for the 11th annual ceremony, according to a release from the mayor's office. Nearly 400 Chicago businesses, start-up entrepreneurs, civic and nonprofit innovators were nominated in the spring. Over 1,200 of them attended, as well as investors.
"Fostering innovation in Chicago is a central focus of my work as Mayor," Emanuel said. "I'll continue to seek creative ways to spur economic opportunity in the city of Chicago in key areas, and I look forward to working with the entire business community to accomplish this goal."
All nominated parties were honored earlier in the year at the House of Blues and at Northwestern University, during a day-long executive education program.
Emanuel will get the chance to ring the NASDAQ bell in New York City on Feb. 25, along with the rest of this year's winners.
City Council Economic, Capital and Technology Development committee chair Ald. Tom Tunney said Chicago has become a "hotbed" for entrepreneurs and innovation in many areas, like technology and healthcare. He said the Chicago Innovation Awards ceremony was a great chance to celebrate the "tremendous energy" in the city.
