Jackson Jr. leads polls on his way back to Mayo, Rush and Davis ask for patience

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said his congressman son has checked back into the Mayo Clinic for an evaluation.

The elder Jackson told The Associated Press that Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was back at the Minnesota facility Tuesday. Rev. Jackson said the evaluation may lead to a longer stay.

A Mayo spokesman and Jackson's office didn't immediately have an update.

Congressmen Bobby Rush and Danny Davis visited Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. at his Washington home on Monday for about an hour, saying the Chicago Democrat looks good but is in fragile condition.

FOX Chicago News exclusively learned around 5 p.m. Monday that the ailing congressman would begin his return journey to Minnesota's Mayo Clinic for a longer visit.

Rush told The Associated Press they decided to visit after talking with Jackson's family, and confirmed that he was on his way back to the Minnesota clinic.

Jackson Jr. was released from there last month following treatment for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues.

Jackson's father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Sunday his son would return to Mayo for a checkup but might stay longer. Jackson hasn't said when he'll return to work.

He faces re-election Nov. 6 and despite all of the questions swirling around him, Jackson appears to have a comfortable lead over both opponents in the 2nd District. A We Ask America poll shows Jackson with 58% of the vote, with Republican Brian Woodworth well behind at 27%, and Independent Marcus Lewis at 15%.

Jackson's first communication with voters since June was a weekend robocall asking for patience.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
