On Monday's Chat Room Sun-Times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter discuss Brad Pitt and Big Bird.
First up, Chanel has recently released an ad for its Chanel No. 5 perfume which features Brad Pitt. Pitt appears (some say) homeless, forlorn and almost incoherent in the ad. Having received a reported $7 million for the appearance many ask why would he allow himself to be presented in such a way? Saturday Night Live did what is being hailed as the perfect parody of the ad. Clearly this is not what Karl Lagerfield had in mind, or did he?
Susanna thinks Chanel probably expected some of this reaction. The brand has a dated reputation, and to use Brad Pitt to pitch it's No. 5 was pretty clever - and will definitely get the younger consumers talking as witnessed by the viral response.
Rochelle agreed with Susanna, stating that this is Marketing 101: While the ad may not translate into mass purchases of the Chanel No.5 perfume, it certainly is off the charts in terms of brand awareness given all of the media attention it has received.
Next the ladies chat about Sesame Street's "Cease and Desist" notice to a company selling a "sexy Big Bird" Halloween costume.
Rochelle thinks this is a result of increased attention to Big Bird since Mitt Romney's comment about cutting the funding for PBS. Additionally this same company has multiple Sesame Street character costumes - all of which are sexy. So why are they only concerned about protecting Big Bird?
Susanna thinks the company has a right to protect its' Brand, but questioned whether or not the outfit even looks like Big Bird - she thinks not!
