CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Three correctional officers were among the eight people injured in a traffic accident on the Southwest Side Saturday afternoon.

The officers were on their way to work when the car they were traveling in collided with a Mercedes about 2:43 p.m. near 31st and Rockwell streets, authorities said.

One of the officers was in surgery for a broken leg at Mount Sinai Hospital, said Cook County Sheriff's office spokesman Frank Bilecki. Another officer was released and third officer will be released Saturday night, Bilecki said.

The trio was not in a county vehicle at the time of the accident, Bilecki said.

A child and two adults were inside the Mercedes that struck the car with the correctional officers, Bilecki said, adding that they were treated and released from John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

Police News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss said none of the eight people suffered life-threatening injuries.

Fire Media Affairs originally said two people were taken in serious to critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, two were taken in serious to critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and four others were taken in good condition to Saint Anthony Hospital.

An EMS Plan I response, which sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was called for the crash.

Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said the cause of the accident was not immediately known.
