CALUMET CITY, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The boyfriend of a missing Calumet City woman has been charged with her murder, authorities announced Saturday.

Donal E. Clark, 42, is facing first-degree murder and concealment charges connected to the disappearance of Gena Chiodo.

Chiodo, 42, was last heard from on Oct. 13. And police said they still didn't know where her body was late Saturday.

But they confirmed what friends and family had feared.

"My gut tells me something bad has happened – really bad," Chiodo's father Donald said from his Cape Coral, Fla. home earlier Saturday.

Longtime friend Patty Nasella said she believed her friend's relationship with her boyfriend of 13 months was dysfunctional. Nasella wasn't surprised that the man who himself called police to report Chiodo missing was accused of killing her.

"We got the son of a bitch. I knew he did it. When he walked out of the house with police and he gave us that smug grin, like he won. . .He was mean, cruel and abusive," Nasella said.

Hours before, police called off a volunteer search, saying that a "person of interest" provided investigators with new information.

Nasella said Chiodo wished her a happy birthday while they talked on the phone on Oct. 13,

The next day, Nasella texted Chiodo to invite her out for dinner but didn't hear back. She wasn't particularly concerned, though, because Chiodo often turned her phone off.

But by Wednesay, a mutual friend, Michelle Mack, told Nasella that the Hammond Police had come to her home for a wellness check after Chiodo's coworkers at a Hair Cuttery in Munster, Ind. reported that she hadn't come to work. Chiodo listed Mack's address as her primary residence.

Before she was reported missing, Chiodo's vehicle and house keys were left the home she shared with Clark, in the 1300 block of Price Avenue, police said.

Anyone with information should call the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force at (708) 868-2500 or the Calumet City police at (708) 868-2500.
