A 24-year-old west suburban man has been charged with contacting a 14-year-old Wheeling girl by text message, then traveling to the northwest suburbs to have sex with her.
On Thursday, the girl was solicited by Jeffery Vanderhayden through text messages where he asked her how old she was and if she wanted to meet him alone, according to Wheeling police.
The girl told her mother, who contacted police, and they then went to the police station. While at the station, Vanderhayden continued sending unsolicited texts to the girl, according to police. He told her he wanted to engage in specific sexual acts and that he would meet her in Wheeling that evening.
Detectives went to the meeting location in the 500 block of North McHenry Road, and as soon as he arrived, Vanderhayden was taken into custody without incident, a release from police said. He allegedly told police he knew the girl was 14 and that the only reason he contacted her was to have sex.
Vanderhayden was charged with one felony count each of grooming and traveling to meet a minor. Bond was set at $75,000 and his next court appearance is 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 in Rolling Meadows, according to police.
