CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is staying out of sight. But Governor Pat Quinn gave him some advice Thursday.

Quinn said he would never second guess a doctor, but thinks Jackson's constituents would probably appreciate some kind of update.

"It's always helpful if you are in elected office - no matter what office - to provide as much information to your constituents and the people as possible," Quinn said. "I think that's the way government should be."

The congressman hasn't held a public event in months – since he took his medical leave of absence in June. His team announced weeks later that the congressman was being treated for severe depression.

This week, a reporter with TheDaily.com did snag photos of him outside his Washington D.C. home. Jackson told the reported that he is "not well."

Jackson is under treatment for bipolar disorder.

He is up for re-election in Illinois' 2nd district. Republican candidate Brian Woodworth and Democratic hopeful Marcus Lewis told FOX Chicago News that they say if he can't do his job, Jackson should step down.
