A heads up on legislators 'phantom' Capitol sessions

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -- In the grand scheme of things, this is a blip, but a blip worth reporting.

Everybody knows that Job No. 1 for House Republicans is to maintain control of that body and in order to do that, GOP members have to knock on doors, put the arm on lobbyists to raise cash, and light a candle or two that President Obama doesn't swamp Mr. Romney here next month.

But these guys are not oblivious to the notion that they still receive a monthly paycheck to also appear from time to time at the state Capitol.  After all their other job is to represent the citizens, which takes a back seat to getting re-elected, but then, who is keeping score?

Well here's the scheme.  Just in case any voter back home asks, "when are you going to be in Lansing?", lawmakers could honestly say that house sessions were set for two dates last month and one this month and that is not a lie.

But if the citizen was not savvy enough to ask the right question, that person would fail to find out that no attendance or voting was done on those dates.

That is legislative code for, "you don't have to show up if you want to stay on the campaign trail." Only legislators would  understand the trickery here. And the unsuspecting schlub back home asking the question is none the wiser

Pretty neat, eh?

On one hand lawmakers can proudly announce we had a session but never disclose that very few bothered to show-up.

Less you conclude the Democrats are not culpable here, they are more than happy to continue campaigning, too.

As suggested this is not the end of the world, but to make sure these guys don't get away with this slight of hand, and to let them know somebody is watching, it was important to share this with you. Do with it what you will.

Well lookie here. Schauer 45%. Snyder 43%. Now before all you Democrats start popping champagne corks, some sobering analysis of the numbers.

The I's have it. Here we go with the popular wisdom schtick again. It says that independent voters hold the key to the outcome in the race for governor.

About 75% of the school children across the country are already in school but not in Michigan, where the tourism industry has convinced lawmakers to delay the opening of school until after Labor Day.
