The families of a 10-day-old Missouri baby who died and two others sickened by meningitis caused by the cronobacter sakazakii bacteria have filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the powdered baby formula believed responsible.
According to the lawsuit filed Tuesday in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Avery Cornett died Dec. 18, after being fed Enfamil Premium Newborn powdered formula. Porsche Rapacz was fed Enfamil Premium Newborn and Nadilynn Mohler was fed that formula and Enfamil Gentlease.
The lawsuit accuses manufacturer, Illinois-based Mead Johnson Nutrition Co., of negligence. It contends that since 2000, environmental sampling from Mead Johnson's facilities has "revealed harmful bacteriain (in) raw ingredients, premix product and finished products."
The lawsuit seeks damages for negligence.
Mead Johnson spokesman Christopher Perille noted tests of the formula detected no bacteria.
