CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE: A man was wounded in a shooting Tuesday morning in the Near North Side Gold Coast neighborhood.

Chicago police said the victim's car was parked on East Chestnut Street. The 41-year-old victim reportedly came out of a downtown nightclub and arrived at the Tempo Café to grab a bite to eat with three women.

After some sort of altercation, the man was shot in the thigh around 5 a.m. in the 0-100 block of Chestnut. He ended up on the sidewalk seating area of the restaurant, where paramedics treated him and took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

Area residents are in shock that a shooting like this could happen in the Gold Coast neighborhood.

"When you hear something downtown, [you think] oh no, not here," one resident said. "Oh, yes, here. It's just a matter of time. You have to be cautious. Some people see an opportunity to commit a crime and think they can get away with it, they would try it anyway."

The three women who were with the victim were taken away from the scene by police.

The suspect apparently ran away down State Street and around the corner. No one was in custody Tuesday morning.

The gunman is described as a black man in his 30s with a light complexion, between 5-feet-9 to 5-feet-10, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

Area Central detectives are investigating, and they noticed there are surveillance cameras along the suspect's route. They hope to get some evidence from those cameras.
