An 85-year-old woman was killed during a hit-and-run accident early Sunday in the West Side Austin neighborhood.
The woman was struck by a vehicle in the 5600 block of West Division Street near Waller, at 3:30 a.m. according to News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss said. The dark-colored vehicle fled west on Division Street.
The victim was identified as Bessie Manning, of the 300 block of North Menard Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. She was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai hospital.
Waller is only two streets from Manning's home. She lived about one mile south, at a senior residential facility, with her sister. The family notified the police when they found out she was missing.
Police wonder what she was doing out so late - and so far - from her home. They continued to check video surveillance, and some of the area businesses checked their own videotapes to see if anything was pointed in the direction of the incident.
Community organizations raised concern about reckless driving on Division Street Monday.
"Unfortunately it was a senior, a resident from the community, it could be a child next, and we definitely don't want this to happen," one resident said. "We have to come up with solutions to try to stop this situation, this reckless driving. This is just terrible."
The Major Accidents Investigation Unit urges people to come forward with information.
The family wants the driver to turn himself in. The Northwest Austin Council is also planning to distribute flyers to encouraging people in the community to help out with information if they have it.
