URBANA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A University of Illinois student from northwest suburban Lake in the Hills was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Urbana.
Anthony G. Pauls, of Lake in the Hills, was pronounced dead at 7:54 a.m. Saturday at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, according to Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup. An autopsy Saturday determined Pauls died from multiple injuries suffered in the accident.
About 11:50 p.m. on Friday, the 22-year-old man was hit by a vehicle in the 200 block of West University Avenue, the release said, adding that the vehicle fled the scene.
Shortly after the accident, a police sergeant saw a vehicle with "heavy damage" and pulled the vehicle over, the release said.
The man was taken into custody, the release said, and investigators determined the vehicle was the one that hit the student.
The driver—Albert Fleming, 20, of Champaign—was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, and other traffic charges, according to the release. He was being held at the Champaign County Satellite Jail.
Police urged anyone with information regarding the accident to contact the Urbana Police Department at (217) 384-2320.
