Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle say a program to involve business and community members in helping to reduce crime has had success over the past year.
It's called the Community Anti-violence and Restoration Effort, or CARE.
At a meeting with business and community leaders Saturday, Emanuel and Preckwinkle said the effort is making neighborhoods safer.
More than 1,000 residents have participated in one key part of the initiative known as "wrap around" meetings, where people try to prevent crime from returning to drug markets that have been cleared by police.
The initiative also includes a safe passage program in which residents patrol pathways to and from schools.
There are also after-school and mentoring programs for youths.
