DETROIT -- There was no testimony Friday in the corruption trial of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, but it's been quite a week as prosecutors revealed a long list of people who were paid from the Kilpatrick Civic Fund.
These days it seems like my dog and I are the only souls in Detroit who didn't get a check from the nonprofit Kilpatirck Civic Fund, and frankly, I'm not so sure about my dog. But after a week of testimony, here's a quick recap of where all that loot ended up.
Kwame Kilpatrick's nonprofit civic fund was supposed to help Detroiters, but federal prosecutors say it mainly helped Detroiters who were related to Kwame Kilpatrick.
Kwame Kilpatrick's father, Bernard, his sister, Ayanna, his half-sister, Diarra, his lover, Christine Beatty, and Beatty's half-sister April Edgar all got a piece of the action.
Witnesses like IRS agent Ron Sauer testified this week that some of them were paid through their companies. Others got treated to luxurious trips, like the clandestine getaway Kilpatrick and his then lover and chief of staff Christine Beatty took to the Sonnenalp Resort in Vail in 2002.
Several years later, Kilpatrick took his family to the exclusive La Costa Resort and Spa in California where some of the $8,000 the civic fund shelled out went for his and her massages.
Kilpatrick attorney Jim Thomas justified many of the expenses by saying they helped Kilpatrick raise more money for the fund or helped burnish his tarnished image.
He defended payments to New York University's Tisch School of Arts and Tennessee State University, both made on behalf of Kilpatrick kin, as supporting educational institutions, which is one of the stated purposes of the civic fund.
Prosecutors are expected to continue delving into the civic fund payouts when the case returns to court on Tuesday.
While the payouts made for some compelling testimony, I suspect the real dynamite in this case involves where all that money came from. But, so far, no word when we'll get those stories.
