Well-known Kankakee doctor stabbed to death, wife injured

Posted: Updated:

Police in Kankakee said a 35-year-old Bradley man slit his own throat and told police he killed two people when he called 911.

Detectives used flashlights to search every inch of a Kankakee home after Dr. James Goldenstein, 81, was found stabbed to death.

"[There were] superficial wounds to the head neck chest involving left lung and left jugular," Kankakee Coroner Bob Gressner said.

The retired OB/GYN practiced in the area since 1962. He was stabbed multiple times Friday morning.

His wife, 81-year-old Betty Goldenstein was also stabbed but survived. She is currently listed in stable condition.

The suspect called 911, following the attack.

Police said the 911 call came in before 6 a.m. from Phillip Horrell, 35. He was standing on this street corner at court and Curtis Ave. with a bleeding neck.

By Friday night, Kankakee police wouldn't say what the motive might be, or if the couple knew Horrell.

Marta Shalley was Dr. Goldenstein's patient for 20 years.

"[He was a] compassionate person, [a] thorough, kind person," Shalley said.

Kankakee State's Attorney Jamie Boyd said this gruesome murder and attack could have been prevented, had Horrell been released from prison on time – instead of early.

"Phillip Horrell was released two days ago, and was sentenced to eight years in 2009," Boyd said. "[It was] not [his] first trip to [the] Illinois Department of Corrections."

Horrell has a record for burglary, and police said they expect to charge him with first degree murder. He was under police guard in the hospital Friday.

Police continue their investigations, and were talking to witnesses Friday night.
