Armed robbery sparks manhut, halts Metra trains

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Far South Side armed robbery sparked a manhunt Wednesday night that went through two suburbs, and left some nearby Metra riders stranded for more than an hour as police responded.

The incident began when Chicago Police responded to an armed robbery in the city's Morgan Park police district, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said, citing preliminary information.

The ensuing police response went through the nearby suburbs of Harvey and Riverdale, and came close enough to Metra's Electric Line tracks that officials halted trains in the area, authorities said.

Train service was stopped between the Ivanhoe station in Riverdale and the 147th Street station in Harvey for roughly an hour starting at 5:15 p.m. as police responded, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said. Riders are on the move again Wednesday night.

No one was injured in the incident, though it was not immediately clear whether anyone was in custody Wednesday night, O'Brien said.

Spokespersons for the Riverdale and Harvey police departments deferred comment to Chicago authorities.
