Elgin police crack down on pawn shops selling stolen goods

ELGIN, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

The Elgin police department is launching a new program to crack down on pawn shops that buy and sell stolen goods.

Under the new plan, pawn shops, resale dealers and scrap dealers will have to log all purchases and load the serial numbers of the goods in to a national database.

That will make it easier for police to track down stolen goods and cut off an easy source of cash for thieves.

It would also prevent businesses from selling or processing any item for ten days.
