NAPERVILLE, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

Federal investigators said pilot error is the cause of a 2010 Naperville single-engine plane crash.

The plane crashed into the X-Sport Fitness Center's basketball court near 75th Street and Route 59 after the pilot failed to abort takeoff.

The aircraft was headed to Pittsburgh.

The National Transportation Safety Board also said improper annual inspection and a hole in the exhaust pipe were contributing factors.

The pilot and his wife were seriously injured. Gym members and employees escaped injury.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft is registered to Airplane Holdings Company in Wilmington, Del.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
