Selecting new Detroit Police chief could be a long process

DETROIT -- The search for a permanent replacement for former Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee now gets underway.  The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners is tasked with finding ideal candidates.  Mayor Dave Bing then chooses one as his choice.  Under the new city charter, the city council has a say.  They vote yes or no on the mayor's choice.

This whole process could take months, and if the city council votes down the mayor's selection, it goes from council chambers back to the drawing board.  However, it may be a long road before it even gets to council.

"The charter requires them to go through a very extensive search with a qualified firm, so I think selecting the firm that will assist them, screening and vetting candidates will take a process.  Then Mayor Bing obviously has a period of time to make his own (decision) from this list of candidates who he wants to propose to the city council," municipal attorney Patrick McCauley explained.

It's happened before and could be possible again that Interim Chief Chester Logan's name will be tossed out as a possibility for permanent chief.  My sources say he has some support on the city council, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.  Before the selection process, there's already sparring between the mayor's office and the board of commissioners over how the investigation into Chief Godbee should go.

"Mayor Bing, I understand, has asked the Department of Human Resources to conduct the investigation.  The Board of Police Commissioners has said wait a second, under the charter this is our responsibility to review and oversee how the department operates," McCauley said.

So this process is expected to be long and once it is finished it may become complicated once again because of the mayoral election in 2013.  We may have a new mayor and he may decide to appoint his own, new police chief.
