3 in custody in Edgewater jewelry store heist

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Armed robbers held up an Edgewater jewelry store in broad daylight Monday, leaving employees tied up and shaken.  Chicago police were called to the Bryn Mawr Jewelry Company shortly before 2 p.m. after the robbers used rope to tie up workers, and then fled with an undisclosed amount of money and jewels.

The first that anyone in the neighborhood knew of the robbery was when an employee escaped out the front door yelling for help.

"Around 1 o'clock we heard this guy came screaming outside, help, looking for help and he was tied up to the chair," explains nearby Dunkin Donuts employee Aamir Ali.

Neighbors said they believed the robbers ran out the back door of the jewelry store. Police caught the first suspect hiding in a dead end gangway in the 1900 block of W. Balmoral, where officers recovered the stolen jewels after breaking down a fence. Neighbors reported seeing about 20 officers running through backyards and then near the gangway.

A short time later two other persons of interest were also taken into custody.

Chris Poole's wife was one of the victims. He was at work when she called him.

"Everybody's fine," he said, adding "it's scary, so her and I will have to think about things."

Corey Goss, who said he previously shopped for an engagement ring in the store, said it was disturbing to think about this kind of robbery happening in broad daylight.

"It just kinda lets me know that the neighborhood is changing a little bit, it kinda sucks because these guys have been here for years, you know and they've always been nice and there's never really been a sign of any type of problems in the neighborhood like that, Goss said.

Police spent hours at the store collecting evidence while detectives talked to witnesses.

"I've been here for a long time and I have never seen or witnessed anything like that before," said Aamir Ali.

Police continued to investigate the case Monday night, but had not filed any charges.
