LOCKPORT, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A suspect in the recent Standard Bank robbery in Lockport was arrested Saturday during another attempted bank robbery, Lockport police said.
Police said the Indiana man was captured during the attempted robbery of a Bank of America branch in the 600 block of Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn.
The man is in the custody of the FBI and reportedly confessed to the Lockport robbery as well. Details on his identity were awaiting the filing of formal charges.
At 9:30 a.m. Oct. 2, Lockport police received a report of a bank robbery at Standard Bank at 16545 159th St. in Lockport.
An elderly "well-dressed" robber approached a teller and showed her he was carrying a small black handgun and a black bag.
He told the teller to put all her money in the bag and showed her a note. No one was injured in the robbery.
Surveillance footage showed the suspect is a white man between 60 and 70 years old and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was wearing a fedora, silver-rimmed sunglasses, a black suit and tie.
Glen Ellyn police said in a statement the man, believed to be 70, approached a bank employee about 11 a.m. Saturday and demanded money at gunpoint, Glen Ellyn police said. The man left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and got into a vehicle.
Glen Ellyn police followed the vehicle and stopped it near St. Charles Road and Main Street in Lombard, police said. Two people were taken into custody.
