Game Preview: Bears at Jaguars

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX Chicago Sports Analyst Tom Waddle's preview of Sunday's matchup between the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The most important development in Dallas last week was the vast improvement made by this Chicago Bears offense. The pocket was clean and Mike Tice did an excellent job staying patient and managing things early. And then players made plays. Wide receivers won their battles and we saw Jay Cutler at his best. Progress, that's what I was looking for and I saw a bunch.

As for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the struggles continue. Blaine Gabbert is making progress in his second year, taking care of the ball and not making the crucial mistake in crunch time. He still lacks the weapons on the edge for these Jags to be a legitimate threat on Sundays. Obviously the key is Maurice Jones-Drew. He led the league in rushing last year despite facing eight and nine man fronts every week. He's averaging 90 yards per game and 5 yards per carry despite similar attention this year. The Bears get the edge on offense.

The Bears continue to be led by their defense, five more interceptions, two pick sixes, what more can you say about this defense. They continue to press the issue up front, which makes quarterbacks have to make quicker decisions, which leads to turnovers. Rod Marinelli's guys should make life difficult for Gabbert.

The Jags struggles aren't limited to their offense. Through four weeks, they're allowing 405 yards and 24 points per Sunday. They lack a pass rush and big play ability, sacking just two quarterbacks and forcing just four turnovers. If you can name one starter on the Jacksonville defense I will give you a dollar. Okay, that's not true, I'm not giving away money, I have four daughters and more liabilities than assets, but this isn't a defense many know much about.

Special Teams

Robbie Gould is perfect and I'm telling you, Devin Hester is on the verge of getting back on track. The Bears get the special teams edge.

Momentum can be a fickle creature and you have to capitalize on big Mo, when it shows up. That means building off a huge win on the road. No let downs allowed. As I have said repeatedly, step one towards a championship season is beating the teams you are supposed to beat. Like the Rams and Colts, the Jags are one of those teams. The Bears are the better team, but better doesn't always deliver a win. This game is more about what you're doing, not what the opponent is doing. Don't let up, no mental mistakes, take care of the football, and play hard. That should be plenty to take care of an inferior opponent. In Lovie speak, the Bears just finished the first quarter with an impressive 3-1 record. The next quarter looks promising, and it starts Sunday.

Bears 27, Jaguars 13
