Police warn of gang of robbers hitting North Side stores

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A warning for Chicago area businesses: Police say an armed gang of robbers are on the prowl. Fox Chicago has obtained dramatic security video of them in action.

Chicago police believe the same group of men is responsible for eight robberies in the city and officials say the same individuals may also have branched out to some North Shore suburbs. The concern is the violence could escalate.

Security cameras captured video of the robbers in one of the most recent crimes, a brazen robbery last week in Lincoln Park.

The store manager said he is still shaken after having a gun pointed right at him.

"Three men stormed the customer service office, demanded that we open up the cash register, one was cleaning out the cash register, there was another one on the ground loading up cigarettes and bottles of high end liquor," the manager explained.

The manager suspects the armed thugs cased his store in advance, because they were in and out in two minutes demanding cooperation.

Chicago police say the North Side robberies started on August 21st and in each case two to five African-American men in hoodies or hats, armed with a silver or black semi-automatic weapon, stole cash, booze, cigarettes, and in one case, personal items from a customer.

No one has been hurt in any of the holdups, even though in this case a robber threatened a cashier.

"He went directly in front of the cashiers and brandished a firearm in front of all the cashiers, and one of our cashiers raised his hands up and he was told put his hands down otherwise he would get his head blown off," the store manager continued.

Police in Skokie and Highland Park are investigating similar crimes that appear to be the work of the same gang.

The manager said during this robbery, his main thought was to cooperate and survive. The money taken didn't matter.

"They stole something more valuable, than anything physical, the piece of mind they took from all of us."
