CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A blood-stained Maserati luxury sports sedan police believe was used in the murder of a southwest suburban bride hours after her wedding last summer has been recovered in the garage of the groom's brother, prosecutors say.
Estrella Carrera was found stabbed to death in her Burbank bathtub, still clad in the silver cocktail dress she wore to her wedding reception, on May 13, two days after she married Arnoldo Jimenez, 30, in a City Hall ceremony. A federal murder warrant was issued for Jimenez soon after.
Jimenez was last seen in the black 2006 Maserati, and was believed to be heading for Mexico. But when Jimenez's brother Humberto appeared in federal court Wednesday on an unrelated drug case, prosecutors revealed fresh information about the missing vehicle — alleging Humberto helped his brother escape, the Sun-Times is reporting.
Agents arresting Humberto Jimenez on Thursday found the Maserati in his garage, prosecutors said. The inside of the car was covered in blood, which someone appeared to have made a feeble attempt to clean up, it was alleged.
Phone conversations that were wiretapped as a part of the drug investigation show Humberto Jimenez was with his brother as he fled for the border, and that he told pals "there's an emergency" and a "huge problem" the day after Carrera was killed, prosecutors said.
Arnoldo Jimenez had told relatives he had a fight with his new wife and left her bleeding, according to court papers. Telephone records allowed police to track his escape to Hidalgo, Texas, near the Mexican border, the papers state.
Humberto Jimenez is accused of leading a major drug conspiracy that involves 38 other defendants, but he has not been charged in connection with Carrera's death or his brother's escape. His brother remains at large.
The Maserati is now in the possession of Burbank Police, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.
