DES PLAINES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A pizza restaurant in a northwest suburban strip mall was badly damaged in a fire early Wednesday and likely won't be reopening soon, according to a firefighter.

About 5:08 a.m. a passerby alerted the Des Plaines Fire Department of a fire at Mugavero's Pizza at 600 Central Rd., Deputy Fire Chief Randy Trost said.

Firefighters arrived at the four-unit strip mall within three minutes, he said, and found heavy smoke and fire in the restaurant, one of the center units of the mall. They brought two lines into the restaurant and were able to extinguish the main body of the fire in 10-15 minutes, Trost said.

Crews remained on the scene for about an hour but there was no extension of the fire to the neighboring businesses, he said.

"Companies were in the units to the west and east, and were able to cut off any lateral extension," Trost said. Those two neighboring units, a computer repair business and liquor store, sustained only water damage.

The restaurant sustained severe damage and won't be reopening anytime soon, Trost said.

No one was inside at the time of the fire and there were no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Wednesday afternoon.
