CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Metra Electric District line train fatally struck a pedestrian Tuesday night in the South Side Hyde Park neighborhood, officials said.

Outbound train No. 237 hit the pedestrian about 5:50 p.m. near 53rd Street, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.

The male pedestrian, of an unknown age, was killed, Gillis said. However, circumstances surrounding the incident were not yet known Tuesday night.

The train, which was scheduled to arrive in Blue Island at 6:28 p.m., was stopped for at least an hour while crews investigated, according to Metra.

Chicago Fire Department crews responded, but did not transport any patients to area hospitals, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Train service through the area has resumed with some residual delays Tuesday night, Gillis said.
