WESTVILLE, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A veteran Indiana Toll Road worker and a speeding motorist were killed Tuesday morning when a car crashed into a maintenance truck on the Toll Road in LaPorte County.
The speeding 2005 Hyundai Sante Fe struck the rear of a maintenance pickup about 11:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90) just east of the Michigan City exit near Westville, according to a release from Indiana State Police.
Toll Road employee Daniel J. Miller, 52, of LaPorte, had just exited the Ford pickup to get trimming equipment from the back when the Hyundai crashed into the rear, according to ISP. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
Miller was a 17-year Toll Road employee working for LaPorte District Maintenance Area 2, ISP said.
The driver of the Sante Fe was airlifted to Memorial Hospital of South Bend, where he was pronounced dead, State Police said. His name is not being released pending family notification.
The pickup truck was parked on the inner shoulder with its warning lights activated and a lit arrow board, State Police said. There were also signs behind the truck warning westbound traffic of the work.
The truck driver, Devin Standefer, 49, of LaPorte, was taken to Franciscan Saint Anthony's Health in Michigan City with non-life-threatening injuries, State Police said. Standefer is a 12-year Toll Road employee.
Both vehicles were totaled and westbound lanes were closed for about two hours.
