Chicago teachers vote on contract

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Members of the Chicago Teachers Union are voting on a proposed contract reached after a seven-day strike last month.

Teachers at more than 600 schools around the city started voting Tuesday before school and voting is also taking place after school. The union says that the ballots will be picked up Tuesday. They will be counted on Wednesday and the results could be announced as early as Wednesday night.

The strike left more than 350,000 students out of class across Chicago. The teachers walked out Sept. 10 after months of tense contract talks in their first strike in 25 years.

The union represents 30,000 teachers and support personnel in the nation's third largest school district.
