A warning for people who use Zillow to look for apartments: The Southtown Star reports that scammers are using the site to target renters.
Eleni Demertzis told the newspaper she contacted the owner of an apartment through Zillow.
But she quickly realized the man was a scammer when he said he lived out of town and wouldn't show her the apartment until she wired him a month's rent.
Demertzis contacted the Cook County Sheriff's Office. It turns out the man is listed on hundreds of online rental ads.
Zillow said anyone asking for an out-of-state wire transfer should raise a red flag.
