NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Naperville police are investigating a report that a bomb or other explosive device was detonated early Sunday morning at the front door of a house on the city's south side.
No injuries were reported in the blast that awakened residents on a stretch of Prairie Knoll Drive near Redstart Road, in the city's Winding Creek Estates neighborhood.
Police as of Monday night had not returned three telephone messages that sought comment on the incident.
At least one detective was observed entering the house mid-Monday afternoon, and a neighbor confirmed she and her husband had been awakened by the explosion.
The Sun on Monday obtained a copy of an e-mail sent to neighborhood residents via the Winding Creek Estates Homeowners' Association. The owner of the house at which the blast occurred "asked that the board notify the neighborhood," the e-mail read in part.
The explosion occurred about 3:25 a.m. Sunday on the 300 block of Prairie Knoll Drive, according to the homeowner's message to the board.
"Someone attempted to break in through the front door by planting a bomb and hitting the door with a ‘door-breaker'," the message declared. "The bomb went off loudly and shattered the glass on the front door and cracked the door itself."
"Our neighbor heard the blast, too, and saw some kids (young adults) running away from the house immediately after the blast," the message read. "Another neighbor thought it was a gunshot."
"The house was filled with thick, white smoke, and white gunpowder was spread all over the front entrance."
"I called 911 and fire and police responded immediately - they are investigating the incident," the message concluded.
A woman who answered the front door Monday afternoon at the house in question declined to comment on the situation there.
