CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
It's that time of year again, when you change your clock and change the battery in your smoke detector. The Chicago Fire Department has come up with a creative way to get the message out.
October is fire safety awareness month, and CFD enlisted the help of a baseball hall of famer to spread the word.
He joined CFD to honor the anniversary of the great Chicago Fire for the
25th annual "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" program.
Outside the Chicago Water Tower Monday morning, they recreated the fabled backdrop for the beginnings of the Great Chicago Fire that was thought to have started in Mrs. O'Leary's barn when her cow knocked over a lantern.
That story has been debunked but the point organizers were trying to make it to be sure to change the battery in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
Ripken Jr. was in town Monday, and he's working with the energizer battery company to give out free batteries in cities across the country.
Ripken and Chicago firefighters will be going door to door in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood later on Monday to hand out free batteries.
