Have an idea on how to rid Chicago of illegal guns? Tweet - FOX 32 News Chicago

Chicago hits record 400th murder this year, asks city for help on Twitter

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Friday, Chicago crossed a milestone it would have preferred not to: 400 murders for the year.

Sadly, it's common for the city to reach that number, though, it typically doesn't happen this quickly. This is the first time in 9 years Chicago has reached 400 homicides prior to October and that number is a 25% increase from 2011. The violence is trending up.

Now, the city is turning to social media for help in solving the city's gun violence.

The city wants anyone with an idea about getting illegal guns off the street to go on Twitter - and tweet out the idea.

A special hashtag was created to streamline these ideas: #WhatIfChicago

Some of the suggestions will be taken up during a panel discussion at "Chicago Ideas Week" next month.
