West suburban police officer seriously injured when hit by car

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Bond was set at $250,000 for a driver who faces felony DUI charges after seriously injuring a west suburban Montgomery police officer early Saturday when he allegedly struck his police cruiser.

Early Saturday, Montgomery police received a report of shots fired at a party in the 700 block of Oakton Avenue, according to Montgomery police.

Sgt. Adam Kuncl was en route to the incident when his vehicle was struck by a car allegedly driven by Kendall Collier, 18, of the 100 block of Linden Drive in Oswego, who was reportedly fleeing the party where the shots were fired, according to police and the accused man's family,

Kuncl -- who has been with the Montgomery Police since 2000 and was promoted to sergeant in 2007 -- was taken to a hospital to be treated and monitored for what were initially described as serious injuries, police said in a release.

Kuncl was released from the hospital Sunday after suffering a skull fracture that required stitches to his head, a broken scapula, compressed discs in his back, and multiple lacerations and bruises about the head, face, and body, Montgomery police said.

Collier was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence and more charges are expected, police said. His bond was set Sunday at $250,000 at a Kane County courthouse.

"We appreciate the strong outpouring of support for Sgt. Kuncl and his family," Police Chief Daniel Meyers said in a statement issued late Saturday. The department also thanked police from Kane and Kendall counties as well as officers from Aurora, Sugar Grove and Oswego for their assistance.

It is not known if there were any arrests in the shooting or whether police were looking for any other suspects. Montgomery police did not return calls for comment.

According to Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli, about two hours after the shooting, Aurora officers stopped a black 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup truck that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the shooting.

Ferrelli said a 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were in the truck. The man and woman were both released without charges and the truck was impounded and turned over to Montgomery police, Ferrelli said.

Collier's father Kenneth Collier said he and his wife were out of town when the incident took place. As of Saturday afternoon they had not yet seen their son, he said.

"We're finding out what happened as we go along," the older Collier said.

Kenneth Collier said friends of his son who were at the party have told them that someone started shooting and his son was one of several people fleeing the party. Kendall Collier hit the squad car while he was trying to get away from the shots, according his father. Kendall Collier received stitches in his head after the crash, his father said.

His son, he noted, is a good kid who graduated early from Oswego High School.

"He's gotten himself in a whole heap of trouble this time," Kenneth Collier said.

The family did not have a lawyer as of Saturday afternoon.
