Lake Shore Drive northbound on ramp to close for construction

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Starting Monday, the Lake Shore Drive northbound on-ramp at Michigan Avenue and Oak Street will be closed for construction until mid-November.

Work crews will begin rehabbing the ramp on Monday Oct. 1, replacing the ramp's viaduct and a deteriorating retaining wall during a six-week project, according to a release from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

"This repair project is necessary due to the deteriorated condition of the concrete of the viaduct deck and retaining walls of the ramp, which has not seen any significant rehabilitation since its original construction in 1963," CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein said in the release. "We want to complete this repair work immediately before another winter cycle of freezing and thawing, as well as additional damage that could come from the use of road salt."

Motorists wanting to head northbound on the arterial will be rerouted one mile along Inner Lake Shore Drive, to LaSalle Drive, where they can then enter Lake Shore Drive, the release said.
