CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A naval officer from North Chicago died over the weekend during a training exercise in Afghanistan.

Naval Petty Officer Dion Roberts, 25, would have returned to the U.S. in October. His family told the Chicago Sun-Times that he will be remembered as a "charming, charismatic and outgoing" young man.

Roberts, attended North Chicago High School and graduated in 2005. He was active in NJROTC, the Academy of Finance, volleyball, and tennis.

School officials said Roberts enlisted in the navy during his senior year. He was a member of a special operations team, trained as a gunner's mate.

There is not yet word on how he was killed. A formal investigation will determine the exact cause of his death, which continues Wednesday.

Roberts is the 28th serviceman with ties to Lake County to die in the Mideast since the war on terror began in 2001, according to the Sun-Times.

His parents, Jackie and Denise Roberts, flew to Dover Air Force Base to receive his body over the weekend. Dion was their only son.
