The Dirt: Plants to prune in the fall

Posted: Updated:
OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Most people think about pruning in the spring, but there are some flowering shrubs and perennials that do best when pruned in the fall.

Lyn Duffy with Four Seasons Garden Center said fall is a great time to prune knockout roses, variegated red twig dogwoods and peonies. Watch the video as she demonstrates how to properly prune these plants.

However, there are some you shouldn't prune in the fall.

"You want to make sure you don't prune any shrubs that have already started their buds for next year," she warned.

Duffy said plants to avoid pruning this time of year include azaleas and rhododendrons. You also don't want to prune evergreens unless it is a very light shaping.

There are a lot of beautiful fall days ahead, and Four Seasons Garden Center is standing by to take all of your gardening and pruning questions. They are located at 14471 West Eleven Mile Road in Oak Park. Contact them at (248) 543-4400 or through their website www.FourSeasonsGardenCenter.com.
