CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A Southwest Side man died after emergency crews pulled him out of the Chicago River during the Friday evening rush hour near the Magnificent Mile.
A man walking near North Michigan Avenue and East Wacker Drive saw someone floating in the river about 4:30 p.m. and jumped into the water to help, authorities said.
The man could not reach the person and was picked up by a water taxi, said Fire Media Affairs spokeswoman Meg Alheim. Divers from the Chicago Police and Fire departments were able to locate the person about five minutes after witnesses pointed to where he went under water.
Paramedics performed CPR on the man for 10 minutes before taking him in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died, Alheim said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the man as Antonio Peterson, 26, of the 2400 block of West Flournoy Street.
The man who tried rescuing Peterson did not need medical treatment, Alheim said.
Police have launched an investigation to determine whether or not Peterson's death was an accident or a suicide, said police News Affairs Officer Daryl Baety.
