Building collapses in extra-alarm West Englewood blaze

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A West Englewood building collapsed after it caught fire Wednesday night and spread flames to two neighboring buildings.
Firefighters were first called to the blaze in the 6100 block of South Bishop Street at 8:52 p.m. and called a second alarm for the fire roughly 15 minutes later, Fire Media Affairs spokesperson Meg Ahlheim said.
The vacant, two-story brick building where the fire started collapsed because of the blaze but no one was inside at the time, Ahlheim said.
Flames spread to two occupied buildings to the north and south before crews extinguished the fire shortly before 9:30 p.m., Ahlheim said. No civilians or firefighters were hurt.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
