1st human case of West Nile in McHenry, DuPage total now at 19

As DuPage County health officials reported there are now 19 confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in the county, the health department in Mchenry County announced its first human case.

The victims in the Dupage cases -- which include two fatal infections -- range in age from their 20s through their 70s. The first McHenry County case of west Nile is a 56-year-old man from Cary, a release from the McHenry County Department of Health said.

He was not hospitalized and has since receovered, the release said. Last year McHenry County had one human case all year.

In DuPage County, human cases have been confirmed located in Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont, a release from the DuPage County Health department said.

The virus is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes, and officials are warning residents it remains widespread and may remain so until the arrival of cooler temperatures.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports 115 confirmed human cases of West Nile in Illinois in 2012, including three deaths. The infected have ranged in age from 9 to 82.
