GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A west suburban man was charged with home invasion after allegedly entering the Glen Ellyn home of a woman he knew with a gun Sunday while her boyfriend was there.

Jeffrey H. Beard, 64, of the 1400 block of Avery Avenue in Wheaton, was charged with felony home invasion, reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a converted vehicle, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office. He was also charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery and two misdemeanor FOID Card violations.

Beard allegedly illegally entered a home on Surrey Drive in Glen Ellyn about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, officials said. He confronted the woman and her boyfriend once inside and a brief struggle ensued.

He threatened to shoot them and pointed a gun at the woman's head, according to the state's attorney's office. During the confrontation, Beard's gun allegedly discharged, but no one was injured.

The boyfriend was able to get out of the home and flag down officers for help, according to a release from Glen Ellyn police. Officers surrounded the home and the woman was soon released.

Beard attempted to flee the home but was taken into custody after being Tasered by police, officials said. A handgun was found on Beard.

"A person's home is their sanctuary where they have every right to feel safe," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert B. Berlin said. "It is alleged that Mr. Beard destroyed his victims' sense of security when he decided to arm himself, enter his victim's home and threaten their lives at gunpoint."
